Building Resilience: Disaster Management for Underprivileged Communities

Disaster management is a critical aspect of community development, and it becomes even more important in the case of underprivileged communities. These communities often lack the resources and knowledge required to deal with disasters effectively. Kishorechand Musale Charitable Trust has been working tirelessly towards disaster management in such communities, providing them with the necessary support to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.

Building Resilience: Disaster Management for Underprivileged Communities
Disasters, whether natural or human-made, can have a significant impact on the lives of people. For underprivileged communities, disasters can be particularly devastating, as they lack access to resources and infrastructure required for effective disaster management. KMCT is trying to play a role where we are focusing on the following areas:
  • 1. Preparedness: : KMCT works with communities to identify potential disaster risks and develop preparedness plans. They provide training to community members on first aid, evacuation, and other emergency response measures.
  • 2. Response:During a disaster, KMCT provides essential relief services such as food, water, shelter, and medical aid. They collaborate with local authorities and other non-governmental organisations to coordinate the relief efforts.
  • 3. Recovery: After a disaster, KMCT works with communities to facilitate their recovery. They help communities in rebuilding their homes and livelihoods and provide counselling services to those affected by the disaster.

The mission has always been simple at KMCT: to respond, support and provide immediate relief and resources to underprivileged communities in times of natural or manmade disasters. Simply some exemplary work we have done to promote this mission are

UTTARAKHAND FLOODS: In June 2013, KMCT in association with 'White Army’ & Astarc Group took swIft actions to reach the affected locations and distributed dry food items, drinking water, medicines, clothes and other necessary items - Supporting more than 2000 lives in distress.

KOLHAPUR FLOOD 2016: KMCT donated Speed Boats to the Rapid Action Force for rescue of villagers, used in rescuing people safely from 5 villages. In Kosesari Village (Palghar District), many small children endangered their lives on a daily basis to go to school by crossing a 40 ft deep river by a small wooden raft without any safety measures and constant fear of drowning. KMCT timely intervened and supported the children and villagers with Life Jackets, upgraded Wooden rafts, financial support for the old Lady operating the raft and Infrastructure development on river-bank for easy access. These interventions helped save the lives of approx. 500 school children in that area and has helped them to reach school safely on a daily basis for the past 2 years .

Along with this, during the COVID pandemic 2020 & 2021, KMCT distributed, 10,000+ Food packets to tribal families via Community Kitchen Project, 92,000 + Cloth masks made by KMSTI fashion design team in record time and given to the needy in remote areas along with Sanitizers, 1037 Grocery Kit Distribution To labourers, migrant workers, tribal & the homeless, 20 villages Received Distribution of Oximeters, Steamers and Access to health-care centres via KMCT volunteers and KMCT Supplied 23 Oxygen Concentrators to 12 Hospitals In and around Maharashtra during covid-19 saving hundreds of lives.
